CATS focuses on conserving the land, increasing the understanding of nature, promoting outdoor recreation, and enhancing economic vitality. Below you'll find a curated list of hiking spots perfect for any time of year and the best local cafes to stop at before or after your experience.
Westport
Hidden Quarry Trails - 0.8 mi RT
Embark on a loop trail to explore a hidden quarry. Start between two forest areas and traverse an open field dotted with century-old cement structures, offering a glimpse into the past. This trail promises a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making it an unforgettable adventure for all.
Coon Mountain Trails - 2 mi RT
This trail follows an old road, gradually ascending through the forest. Along the way, hikers climb a stairstep of stones, leading to a fabulous viewpoint. It then meanders through a picturesque frosted forest, passing rock ledges and a gentle creek. This route promises both a scenic ascent and a tranquil journey through nature's hidden gems.
Afterward, you can stop by Jambs on Main on Main Street in Westport for a freshly-brewed cup of coffee or even a delicious sweet treat to fulfill that sweet tooth you have. Essex
North Boquet Summit Trail - 3 mi RT
Embark on a hike through a steep forest, offering spectacular views of the valley below. The trail winds its way up through dense foliage, providing glimpses of the surrounding landscape at every turn. Adventurers can choose to return to the same trail, or opt for the Rocky Ledges Trail for a different perspective and added adventure. Whichever path you choose, this hike promises breathtaking scenery and unforgettable vistas.
Wildway Overlook Trail - 1.5 mi RT
Embark on a rewarding hike with a fairly easy climb to a breathtaking view of the Champlain Valley, Split Rock Wildway, and the Green Mountains of Vermont. The trail offers a seamless connection to the junction of Boquet Mountain and Rocky Ledges Trails, providing opportunities for further exploration.
In Essex, you’ll find two cafes. Essex Ice Cream Cafe and the Pink Pig Cafe. Both are equally delicious so it's hard to choose just one so I suggest heading to both! At the Essex Ice Cream Cafe, you can enjoy fresh and local baked goods, hand pies, fresh espresso, and locally crafted goods from artists around the region! Then you can head on over to the Pink Pig Cafe and have an out-of-the-world breakfast or lunch and top off your coffee at their coffee bar before heading out!
Ticonderoga
LaChute Riverwalk Trail - 3 mi one-way

Treadway Mt. Trail - 7.8 mi RT
Treadway Mountain is one of the more challenging hikes, but the harder the hike the better the view! As hikers ascend, the trail winds through diverse terrain, with towering trees giving way to rocky outcrops and panoramic vistas. Upon reaching the peak, adventurers are rewarded with awe-inspiring views stretching out in every direction, offering a sense of accomplishment and connection with the surrounding landscape. This trail to the mountain top ensures an unforgettable outdoor experience.
