The Adirondacks — all six million acres — is full of artisans crafting everything from rustic furniture to sterling jewelry to delectable baked goods. Visitors to the Lake Champlain Region with a taste for homemade bread, bagels, and freshly baked treats should be sure to stop at Dogwood Bread Company in the hamlet of Wadhams. I made a visit to Dogwood recently, where the scent of fresh bread was enticing and comforting on a chilly winter day.
Dogwood is located in a wonderful old brick building with a lot of personality. Inside and out, the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. Customers can simply pop in for espresso and a fresh loaf of bread, or settle in at a rustic table or on one of the bakery's cushy sofas to enjoy a hot breakfast sandwich in the mornings or, on specific days, pizza in the evening.
Dogwood bakes fresh bread — and bagels, granola, and more — in a wood-fired oven in satisfying varieties like sourdough, jalapeno cheddar, and multi-grain. Don't be surprised if you see people leaving with a armful of loaves; the bread is really that good.
We visited at breakfast time, meaning we treated ourselves to thick, hot bagel sandwiches. The eggs are cooked to order, and topped with cheese and one meat. The day we happened to be there ham was on the menu and it was full of flavor and hearty. I thought my everything bagel was pretty awesome, but my date's cheese covered bagel was even better.
For sweets enthusiasts, Dogwood offers big, soft cookies, like chocolate chip, espresso, and oatmeal raisin - perfect for taking on the road with an espresso, cappuccino, or latte. All of Dogwood's coffees are made from organic, fair-trade beans. If you're not into coffee, choose from kombucha or a variety of fun bottled sodas and juices.
Every Saturday, plus Wednesday during the summer months, Dogwood makes wood-fired pizza that is famous throughout the region for great flavor and the use of fresh, local ingredients. The names are fun, too, like Testosteroni & Cheese, Vegomatic, and I Saw Molly Kissing Santa Claus. In other words, pepperoni and cheese; spinach, peppers, onions, and a balsamic reduction; and roasted garlic, potatoes, and basil. The pizzas, like the breads, bagels, and other treats, are inventive, fun, and of course, super delicious.
Before you leave, browse the shop portion of Dogwood, for homemade granola, frozen Dogwood pizza and entrees, and a nice array of healthy foods you might not find at your local grocery store. Local farms sell their products here, and you never know what seasonal treasures you might find, whether it is something special for your next meal or a sweet gift for a friend.
Dogwood Bread Company is open Thursday through Saturday in the fall and winter, with pizza on Saturdays. Summer hours vary, so be sure to check online or give them a call. Dogwood often hosts live music, so you can relax with your pizza and some great music.
