Joh and Nancy Ockrin, current owners, raised a family of 6 children is this sprawling, yet cozy, farmhouse. They moved in without power or running water! A gazillion improvements have been made since then, but it’s been over 30 years now. Once the youngsters left the nest, they had the inspiration to turn it into a very special B&B.
The Stoney Lonesome B&B is offering an affordable Valentine’s Day Special — make sure you speak directly with Nancy for the details. While you're at, ask about the landscape conditions so you can plan accordingly to get the most out your adventure exploring their 200 acres. Situated directly on the shores of Lake Champlain is the historic hamlet of Essex. In fact, this entire hamlet is on the National Register of Historic Places and claims to be the most intact collection of pre-Civil War architecture in America. Originally a ship building port, this compact little community is a real charmer with a large component of Federal and Greek Revival architecture. You can even arrive by boat, or get your own “on the water” experience as the Lake Champlain Transportation Co. operates a ferry from Essex to Vermont daily, year round, on all but the roughest weather days.
About a block from the ferry port, The Essex Inn is centrally located right on Main Street in the hamlet right. Normally open Thursday through Sunday during the winter months, the inn will be open for Valentine’s Day with a special dinner and rooms available. The inn first opened over 200 years ago. A few short years ago it was completely restored and updated, yet it retains much of the original character and charm. The restaurant receives outstanding reviews for its gourmet cuisine featuring farm fresh local products.
Book a room or a suite with its own fireplace for a cozy, romantic evening together.
How about a stay and an extraordinary dining experience in the oldest tavern in the Adirondacks? The Deer’s Head Inn has been pleasing travelers for over 200 years. Fully renovated in 2016, the inn retains the informal and friendly atmosphere of taverns of yesteryear and boasts its historic character. It’s now an eatery, grocery, and inn; a place with a local pub atmosphere where you immediately feel comfortable and want to share laughs and conversation with friends or that someone special.
On Valentine’s Day, in addition to their regular menu, their Executive Chef, Josh Cunningham, has some special offerings. Consider an herb and truffle roasted pheasant for two, grilled beef tenderloin and lobster Béarnaise sauce, or handmade vegetarian manicotti. I’m salivating! Yes, I have experienced this chef’s fantastic creations and I will let you know you won’t be disappointed. They incorporate the best in local and regional products to offer to guests, in a very appealing presentation — it’s a feast for all senses.
Four well-appointed guest rooms are located on the second level above the tavern. All have undergone recent renovations and all have private baths. You won’t have far to travel after a delicious meal accompanied with a specialty cocktail (or two).
