Coon Mountain Preserve is owned and managed by the Adirondack Land Trust. Coon Mountain has a craggy interior with rocky outcrops, steep cliffs, and talus slopes. In shade there are abundant hemlocks, while the sunnier spots support oak and pine forests. Look for the water birds in small fens and hardwood swamps.

Birding

The deep hemlock forests collect birds known to favor the protection and food offered by this unique environment. Ruffed Grouse shelter under their dense branches, while Northern Flickers, Black-capped Chickadees, Pine Siskins, American Goldfinches, and warbler can be found elsewhere on the property. These woods are the preferred nesting site of the American Robin, Blue Jay, and Wood Thrush. This is also an excellent location to observe raptors and hawks.
