Explore the Westort/Wadhams Area
Westport's permanent settlement began after the French and Indian War, with William Gilliland acquiring land in 1764. Originally called "Northwest Bay," the village became a key port and industrial hub with the opening of the Champlain Canal in 1823. The Delaware & Hudson Railroad's arrival in 1876 spurred Westport’s growth as a resort town, and Camp Dudley, the nation's oldest boys' camp, relocated here in 1891. Although traditional industries declined in the 1960s, Westport has seen a revival with the transformation of the Westport Inn site into Ballard Park and the restoration of its historic Fairgrounds, now a hub for local agriculture and culture.
