The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 brought World War II to a dramatic and bloody end. But, as Andy Buchanan will explore in this lecture, in many parts of the world the formal end of the war brought no peace, instead leading directly into a new series of local wars, revolutions, and struggles for national independence. It was this complex and protracted process—rather than simply Washington’s victory in the world war—that both shaped the new American-led world order and limited its scope. Today, as that order unravels before us, it is more important than ever to understand the nature of its birth.
A frequent Lyceum speaker, Andy Buchanan has been a Senior Lecturer in the History Department at the University of Vermont since 2007. A specialist in Global and Military history, he is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on World War II. His first book, American Grand Strategy in the Mediterranean during World War II, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2014. World War II in Global Perspective was published by Wiley in 2019. His recently published, From World War to Postwar, covers the history of the postwar period through the 1950s.
