Michigans: A North Country Favorite
Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce blog written by Katelyn Chevier
Summers in the North Country are something truly special. Swimming in a nearby lake, enjoying a small town main street parade, and enjoying summer treats like ice cream or Michigans comes to mind when I reflect on summers already gone by. What are Michigans, you ask? If you lived in or visited the North Country, you already have the inside scoop!
Michigans are a simple yet satisfying lunch, dinner, or snack starting off with a hotdog, which is then topped with a delicious homemade meat sauce, all wrapped in a warm hot dog bun. You can also include mustard and finish it off with a sprinkling of fresh diced onions if you chose. This great summer staple originated in Plattsburgh, NY at a local hot dog stand named Clare and Carl's in 1942. To this day, the Michigan stands, a summer tradition, have expanded throughout the North Country, including in the Ticonderoga area! Visitors and locals don’t have to travel 70 miles north to Plattsburgh to enjoy this North Country classic, because some of the best Michigans are being served up in restaurants right here in Ticonderoga!

Wind-Chill Factory
The Wind-Chill Factory, located at 794 NY-9N in Ticonderoga, has Michigans on their menu. You can find them under “Hot Dogs” where they also list a spin on the traditional, the Michigan Cheese Dog. This version has all the original fixings, but adds smothered cheddar on top. A great addition for any cheese lover!
In addition to Michigans, the Wind-Chill Factory also serves great grilled fare along with pizza and salads. If you’re looking for something sweet to wash down your Michigan, grab a cone of soft serve ice cream. You will not be disappointed!

Hot Biscuit Diner
The Michigan lunch at The Hot Biscuit Diner, located at 14 Montcalm Street in Ticonderoga, is served with chips and a pickle. Not only does the Hot Biscuit diner offer Michigans, but they are also known for their specialty of freshly baked-in-house biscuits along with many other homemade country classics. Enjoy a Strawberry Shortcake dessert after your Michigan, when available!

Burleigh’s Luncheonette and Wagon Wheel on Special
Michigans can also be found on special at not one, but two other restaurants in Ticonderoga. If you ever find yourself at Burleigh’s Luncheonette, a 1950s and '60s themed all-American diner at 121 Montcalm, check their specials board. A Michigan on special for lunch at The Burleigh’s Luncheonette will come with either fries or a cup of homemade soup!
The Wagon Wheel Restaurant at 1065 Wicker Street in Ticonderoga often has Michigans on their specials board for the lunchtime rush. A Michigan order at The Wagon Wheel always includes the choice of frozen or homemade fries. Pair it with their house-made French onion soup for a delectable meal!
Michigans to this day prove to be a popular regional pasttime. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from to get your Michigan fix and to experience a taste of the North Country! Whether you’re a local or visiting the area, a Michigan is the perfect must-do for your summer list!
