It’s all about the outdoors in the Adirondacks! Does the idea of having your own little private plot of campground sound appealing? That’s what our many campgrounds are all about. The key to a great camping vacation can be finding the ideal campsite that will be a good fit for your family. Whether you are coming with a , or merely supplies and gear, we are ready to accommodate. Here are a few ideas and features of our many campground facilities within the Lake Champlain Region.

Mobility

Have a toddler in a stroller, a youngster who can’t be pried from her new two-wheeler, or maybe a family member in a wheelchair? The NYS DEC Campground at Crown Point may be ideal. Paved surfaces wind through the campground’s 49 acres. A pedestrian crosswalk connects to the Crown Point State Historic Site and its lengthy, paved drive leads to the site’s museum and fort ruins.This campground overlooks the new Lake Champlain Bridge which connects directly to Chimney Point Historic Site in Vermont for additional exploration. Sidewalks line both the north and south side of the bridge’s 2,100-plus feet. The walks widen at the top creating a great viewing platform over the lake; this is an ideal location to linger and scout for Champ. The Lake Champlain Bridge Interpretive Trail travels under the bridge and is hard-packed gravel. Altogether there are quite a few hard surfaced miles to easily keep those wheels rolling while enjoying the surrounding nature and scenic beauty. 

No tent or camper?

Brookwood RV Resort is located just outside Ticonderoga on Route 9N. Aside from its 70 regular campsites that welcome RVs and tents, the resort has four camping cabins available for rent. The cabins are designed for two adults, with up to four small children under 16. If you are traveling with friends, up to four adults can share a cabin. Cabins must be rented for two nights on weekends; a three night minimum stay is required on holiday weekends. If your family is larger, two of the cabin rentals adjoin, and all are air conditioned. If you arrive without bedding, it can be supplied for an additional fee. Note that if you are traveling with Fido, he’s not allowed inside.

Brookwood RV Resort’s camp store can supply you with the basics in groceries, firewood, and essential supplies. There is also a laundromat available for camper use. Canoe and kayak rentals are available, as well as volleyball and basketball courts and a playground for young children.   

Magic Pines Campground on Route 9 in Lewis also has two camping cabins for rent. The cabins are a single room, approximately 12 x 12 feet, but they do have queen size beds as well as two bunks. Bathroom facilities and showers are just across the drive. You need to bring all your own bedding and any cooking implements you may need. A table-top gas grill is provided. This campground is very popular with the mountain and rock climbing crowd as Pok-O-Moonshine Mountain is only five minutes away. Cabins are available for single night rentals, but you'll want to reserve them early as they fill up fast. A large swimming pool, playground, basketball court, tennis court, mini-putt, horseshoes, table tennis, and other games are available at no extra charge. Wi-Fi is available too, if you simply cannot unplug.

Speaking of beaches

If your family is akin to a school of fish, you will definitely want to find a campground with a beach. We have numerous options, but two you may consider sit right within Port Henry and directly on Lake Champlain. The Port Henry Campground and Champ Beach Park offers a great beach and swimming area. Many of their campsites are on the waterfront as well. This campground is adjacent to the Powerhouse Park fishing pier and a New York state boat launch, so bring the tackle and the boat. Amenities are within a half mile and Boyea’s Lakeside Restaurant is mere steps away for the burger or ice cream fix. 

At the southern end of the hamlet is Bulwagga Bay Campground. Centrally located on the grounds is a large, unobstructed beach area with a view of the Lake Champlain Bridge across the bay. This campground contains approximately 150 sites, some lakefront, and is close to the Iron Center Museum, Van Slooten Harbour Marina, and the Amtrak station. Rent a paddleboard or kayak and get out on the water. 

A few of our campgrounds with beaches are located on other waterbodies and are operated by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Roger’s Rock is located on the northern end of Lake George just a few miles south of the downtown area of Ticonderoga on Route 9N. Campers here can enjoy swimming in the lake’s pristine water and hiking at nearby state-marked trails. Putnam Pond is also within the town of Ticonderoga, but it's a bit more remote. Many hikers use this campground as a home base while exploring the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area, which encompasses over 46,000 acres with 50 miles of trails. The sites are well forested and offer more privacy. Canoes and rowboats are available for rent. Lincoln Pond sits in the town of Elizabethtown along Essex County Route 7. This campground has a fantastic beach area and also offers canoe rentals. Three of their sites are more primitive and accessible by boat only. 

For the active family

The Ausable Chasm Campground and Recreation Center may be the perfect fit for families with older and very active children. There certainly will be plenty to do at the Chasm Campground. Fifteen miles of mountain bike trails are available for all abilities; bring the bike or rent one there. A mountain bike racing series is held every Sunday by the Chasm Riders. This series has several age and ability divisions to accommodate all. Also on the grounds is an 18-hole disc golf course situated within a dense pine forest. Play is free for campers.

Next door, at Ausable Chasm, there is a world of additional recreational opportunities for active adventurists in this “Grand Canyon of the Northeast.” Tubing and rafting on the Ausable River as it winds through the chasm will keep you cool on the hottest of days.

Rappelling and rock climbing add thrills for the more adventurous. The Adventure Trail allows you to criss-cross the river in the Upper Chasm making use of cable bridges, traverses, a cargo net climb, and an edge walk while outfitted in a harness. The chasm offers stay-and-play packages for guests staying at the campground to make everything family-affordable.

Part of the family 

Campers that like a lot of social interaction or are looking for new friends will enjoy Petro's Millbrook RV Park. Bill Sr. and Bill Jr. will make you feel right at home. This quiet, secluded campground borders Mill Brook in Port Henry and features plenty of shade. The Moriah Country Club and golf course are in close proximity. Restaurants, a market, and other amenities are less than a mile away. Campers here frequently gather for potluck suppers in the large weather-protected pavillon or social time around the campfire.  

Whether you arrive by bicycle with a pup-tent, roll in with a 40-foot motorhome, or simply pack your bedding and personal items looking for a camping cabin, the Lake Champlain Region offers numerous campground options for your "home away from home" and personal plot of the Adirondacks.
